Lady Bears comeback falls short at LSUE

The Lady Bears traveled to the Cajun Prairie this afternoon to take on the conference-leading LSUE Lady Bengals in the HPRE Center. The Lady Bears fought hard, but the Lady Bengals had just a bit more firepower, defeating the Lady Bears 67-58.
In the first quarter, the game quickly tied at 3 with 9:20 remaining. The Lady Bengals then went on an 8-2 run to take a six-point lead with 2:34 left in the quarter, making it 11-5. Key buckets from freshman Jacey Coleman helped the Lady Bears close the gap, ending the quarter down by just five, 14-9. The fast-paced first quarter highlighted the Lady Bengals' effectiveness from long range, which helped them build their lead.
The Lady Bears started the second quarter sluggishly on the offensive end. The Lady Bengals opened the quarter with a 12-6 run, extending their lead to eleven points midway through, at 26-15. Their aggressive full-court pressure kept the Lady Bears off balance, allowing them to dominate the boards and secure multiple second-chance offensive opportunities. At halftime, the Lady Bengals led the Lady Bears 36-24.
During halftime, Coach Lee encouraged her players to step up their efforts on both ends of the floor, limit second-chance opportunities, and execute their offensive scheme effectively.
The Lady Bears responded in the third quarter, opening with an 8-2 run to pull within six points with seven minutes remaining, bringing the score to 38-32. They also increased their defensive pressure, putting the Lady Bengals on their heels. Shelcie LeBlanc contributed significantly on the offensive end, scoring six straight points at one point in the quarter. The Lady Bears even took a one-point lead when Koi Ursin hit a three-pointer, putting them ahead 46-45. However, the Lady Bengals ended the quarter on a 6-2 run, reclaiming a three-point lead heading into the final quarter at 51-48.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Bears tied the game at 51 with a free throw and a bucket from both Jacey Coleman and Koi Ursin with 8:38 left. The Lady Bengals quickly retook the lead with two free throws, making it 53-51, and they would not relinquish it thereafter. They forced the Lady Bears into three consecutive turnovers, which helped extend their lead to six points with three minutes remaining. The Lady Bengals sealed the victory by converting five of eight free throws, ending the game at 67-58.
Koi Ursin led the Lady Bears with 19 points off the bench. The Lady Bears had three players score in double figures: Ursin, Shelcie LeBlanc (14 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals), and Jacey Coleman (12 points, 9 rebounds). Paulina Reichenauer led the Lady Bengals with 17 points, with Kamiera McDonald also contributing to their double-digit scoring.
With this loss, the Lady Bears fell to 13-13 overall and 5-3 in conference play, while the Lady Bengals improved to 21-6 overall and 8-0 in conference standings. LSUE leads the all-time series against Baton Rouge with 29 wins to 20 losses.
