Lady Bears hold off Lady Jags for conference victory

The Baton Rouge Lady Bears traveled to Shreveport this afternoon to face the Southern University Shreveport Lady Jags at the Dock on the LSUS campus. The Lady Bears found another gear in the second half to hold off the Lady Jags and secure a 77-65 victory in the LCCAC.
In the first quarter, the Lady Bears started the game sluggishly on both ends of the floor, allowing the Lady Jags to take an early advantage. Southern opened the scoring with a three-pointer and quickly went on a 7-4 run, taking a 10-4 lead just three minutes into the game. The Lady Bears began to find some rhythm offensively, thanks in part to Emani Young, who played aggressively. At the end of the first quarter, the Lady Jags led the Lady Bears 21-17.
The Lady Bears tied the game at 23 with two free throws from LaTraneice McNeill early in the second quarter. The score was tied again at 27 with seven minutes remaining. The Lady Jags struggled offensively, scoring only eleven points in the quarter, which allowed the Lady Bears to take a slim 33-32 lead into halftime, despite an overall lackluster performance.
Both teams scored seventeen points in the third quarter, so the Lady Bears maintained a narrow one-point lead over the Lady Jags, 50-49.
As the fourth quarter began, the Lady Bears started with an 8-5 run, extending their lead to 58-54 with just over seven minutes to play. The Lady Jags managed to close the gap, getting within two points at 58-56 with five minutes remaining. They continued to compete fiercely and pulled within one at 63-62 with four minutes to go. Jacey Coleman then scored to give the Lady Bears a three-point lead at 65-62. Emani Young followed up with back-to-back buckets, increasing the lead to 69-62 Cambrieion Link sealed the victory for the Lady Bears by hitting two free throws, bringing the final score to 71-65.
The Lady Bears were led in scoring by Emani Young with a game high 24 points. Jayla Mendenhall led the Lady Jags with 14 points. The Lady Jags had 3 student atletes scoring in double figutes, Mendenhall, Allen and Davis.
With this victory, the Lady Bears improved to 11-11 overall and 3-1 in conference play, while the Lady Jags fell to 3-13 overall and 0-3 in conference. Baton Rouge leads the all-time series with 49 wins and only 6 losses against Southern Shreveport.

The Lady Bears will return home to the Bonne Sante Wellness Center on Wednesday, February 11, to host the conference-leading LSUE Lady Bengals. Tip-off is set for 5:30 PM in the Bears Den.
