Lady Bears pick up first conference win over SUSLA

The Baton Rouge Lady Bears faced off against the Southern University Shreveport Lady Jags this evening in the Bonne Sante Wellness Center for an LCCAC game. The Lady Bears secured an impressive 81-51 conference victory, thanks to a dominant performance in the second and third quarters.
The first quarter was low-scoring, with the Lady Jags initially taking the lead. After the Lady Bears quickly tied the game with a basket from Triinity Thomas, they pulled ahead 7-6 with a shot from Quiana LaVergne three minutes before the quarter ended. However, the Lady Jags finished the quarter strong, closing with a 7-2 run to take a 13-9 lead into the second quarter.
As the second quarter began, Southern Shreveport held a four-point advantage at 17-13 with eight minutes remaining. Back-to-back baskets from sophomore guard Shelcie LeBlanc tied the game at 17 with 7:41 left. The teams would tie the game two more times throughout the quarter. With five minutes until halftime, the score was tied at 22. The Lady Bears then tightened their defense, holding the Lady Jags scoreless for the final five minutes of the quarter. They outscored Southern Shreveport 10-0 to take a ten-point lead at halftime, 32-22.
The third quarter began similarly to the second, with the Lady Bears excelling defensively through various schemes. They initiated an 18-0 run to start the quarter. The Lady Jags finally scored midway through the third. By the end of the quarter, the Lady Bears had outscored their opponents 30 to 9, leading by 31 points, 62-31, going into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Bears cleared their bench, giving all players some game time. While the Lady Jags outscored the Lady Bears 20-19 in this quarter, it was not enough to overcome the substantial deficit. Baton Rouge defeated Southern Shreveport 81-51, marking their first conference win of the season.
The Lady Bears were led in scoring by Cambrieion Link with 14 points. Five players scored in double figures: Link, Shelcie LeBlanc, Emani Young, Quiana LaVergne, and Jacey Coleman. The Lady Jags were led by Nakaii Webb, who scored a game-high 21 points, with Davis also reaching double figures.
With this victory, the Lady Bears improved to 9-11 overall and 1-1 in conference play, while the Lady Jags fell to 3-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference. Baton Rouge leads the all-time series against Southern University Shreveport with 47 wins and 8 losses.

- Quiana LaVergne contributed 13 points and 5 rebounds off the bench, along with 2 steals.

The Lady Bears will continue LCCAC play on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, when they travel to New Orleans to take on the Delgado Community College Lady Dolphins. Tip-off is set for 5:30 PM in the Williamson Center
