Baton Rouge, LA
This afternoon, the Baton Rouge Lady Bears faced off against the East Mississippi Lady Lions in the Bonne Sante Wellness Center to even the season series. Earlier this season, the Lady Lions had defeated the Lady Bears 71 to 62 in Scooba. However, the Lady Bears bounced back with a dominating 60 to 41 victory today.
The Lady Lions were the first to score, but the Lady Bears quickly responded with a 10-3 run, taking a five-point lead at 10-5 with one minute remaining in the first quarter. Both teams were somewhat sluggish offensively as they tried to figure out each other's game plan. At the end of the first quarter, the Lady Bears held a 12-8 lead.
The second quarter began with the Lady Lions executing a mini 6-0 run to tie the game at 12 with eight minutes remaining. The Lady Bears then converted one of two free throws to regain the lead, which they would not relinquish. Strong inside play from Jacey Coleman and solid point guard performance from Cambrieion Link allowed the Lady Bears to extend their lead to seven points with two minutes left in the half. The Lady Bears outscored the Lady Lions 19 to 14 in the second quarter, taking a 31-22 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter, the Lady Bears received valuable contributions from their bench, with Koi Ursin, LaTraneice McNeill, and Trinity Thomas playing key roles. The Lady Bears increased their lead to 18 points with one minute left in the quarter. Their defensive pressure kept the Lady Lions out of sync offensively, leading the Bears to outscore the Lions 19 to 11 in the third quarter, resulting in a 50-33 advantage heading into the final period.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Bears emptied their bench, allowing every player on the roster to see action. The Lady Bears held the Lady Lions to just eight points in the fourth quarter and only 19 points combined in the third and fourth quarters. Ultimately, the Lady Bears outscored the Lady Lions 10 to 8 in the final quarter, sealing a 60-41 victory.
Cambrieion Link led the Lady Bears with a game-high 18 points, along with four assists and three steals. Three Lady Bears reached double figures: Link, Emani Young (15 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals), and Jacey Coleman (10 points, 11 rebounds for a double-double). With this victory, the Lady Bears improved to 7-10, while the Lady Lions fell to 3-11 on the season. Baton Rouge leads the all-time series against East Mississippi with four wins and two losses.
