Lady Bears fall in overtime to Coyotes

The Lady Bears continued their non-conference schedule this afternoon in the Cooper Center, facing off against the Coastal Alabama North Coyotes. The Baton Rouge Lady Bears held a lead for the majority of the game, but a late-game comeback by the Coyotes resulted in a 76-71 overtime victory for Coastal Alabama North. This win evened the regular-season non-conference series between the two teams, as both squads protected their home court.
The Lady Bears started strong, quickly going on a 14-3 run to open the game. However, the Coyotes answered back with an 11-4 run to end the first quarter. By the end of the first quarter, the Lady Bears led the Coyotes 18-14.
The second quarter was low-scoring, with a combined total of just 23 points – 13 for the Coyotes and 10 for the Lady Bears. Despite their struggles, Baton Rouge maintained a slim one-point lead at halftime, 28-27.
In the third quarter, the Lady Bears found their offensive rhythm again, outscoring the Coyotes 20-12 to take a nine-point lead of 48-39 heading into the final frame. Although the Coyotes briefly took the lead in the third, the Lady Bears finished strong to maintain their lead.
The Coyotes rallied in the fourth quarter, scoring 24 points primarily through second-chance opportunities, ultimately tying the game at 63 by the end of regulation.
In overtime, the game remained tied with just a minute remaining. The Coyotes hit a deep three-pointer to take the lead, which they would not relinquish. Despite a strong effort from the Lady Bears to fight back, they could not overcome the Coyotes' solid defense and fell 76-71.
Emani Young led the Lady Bears in scoring with 26 points, supported by four other players who scored in double figures: Koi Ursin with 11 points, and both Cambrieion Link and Jacey Coleman with 10 points each. For the Coyotes, Ariel Gilchrist was the standout player, scoring a game-high 28 points, with Taylor and Minnefield also contributing to a strong offensive showing.
With this loss, the Lady Bears' record falls to 6-9 on the season, while the Coyotes improve to 7-11, snapping a three-game losing streak. Overall, Baton Rouge still leads the all-time series against Coastal Alabama North with a record of 6 wins and 3 losses.
