Lady Bears comeback falls short at Holmes

The Baton Rouge Lady Bears faced off against the Holmes Community College Lady Bulldogs this evening at Frank Branch Coliseum in a matchup against a Region 23 opponent.
The first quarter started slowly for both teams, with the score tied at six after four minutes of play. The Lady Bears ended the quarter strong, going on an 11-7 run to take a 17-13 lead. Freshman Emani Young and Jacey Coleman provided balanced scoring, along with veteran leadership from sophomore Shelcie LeBlanc.
The second quarter also began slowly offensively for both squads, with sloppy play during the first four minutes. The Lady Bulldogs tied the game at 22 with a jumper and then finished the quarter on an 11-6 run to lead 33-28 over the Lady Bears at halftime. Coach Lee challenged her team to be more aggressive on both ends of the floor and to stick to the game plan, emphasizing that these adjustments could lead to victory.
The Lady Bears played with more intensity in the third quarter, but the Lady Bulldogs maintained their lead, outscoring Baton Rouge 18-14. After three quarters, Holmes led 51-42.
Determined to fight until the end, the Lady Bears received significant contributions from freshman Koi Ursin off the bench. With just two minutes left, Cambrieion Link hit a three-point shot to narrow the deficit to two points, making it 58-56. Koi Ursin then stole the ball and scored on a layup with 1:43 remaining, tying the game at 58. The Lady Bulldogs regained the lead by converting two free throws with 50 seconds left. The Lady Bears increased their defensive pressure, and Cambrieion forced a turnover that ended up in Trinity Thomas's hands. Holmes was called for an flagrant foul, and Trinity made one of two free throws to pull within one point with 13.5 seconds on the clock. The Lady Bears secured the rebound from their next possession, but their shot was unsuccessful, and Holmes grabbed the rebound to secure a 60-59 victory.
Zion Harvey led the Lady Bulldogs with a game-high 18 points, while Jacey Coleman led the Lady Bears with 16 points. Three Lady Bears scored in double figures: Jacey Coleman (16 points, 13 rebounds), Shelcie LeBlanc (11 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists), and Koi Ursin (10 points). The Lady Bulldogs also had three players score in double figures: Harvey, Lewis, and Havard.
With this loss, the Lady Bears fell to 4-6 for the season, while the Lady Bulldogs improved to 5-2. Holmes now leads the all-time series with 14 wins to Baton Rouge's 10.

The Lady Bears will travel to Terrell, Texas, this Saturday, December 6, to face the Southwest Christian College Rams. The game is set to begin at 1 PM at the G. P. Bowser Memorial Physical Education Building.
