The Baton Rouge Lady Bears traveled to Ellisville, Mississippi, this evening to face their Region 23 opponent, the Jones College Bobcats, at the A.B. Howard Gymnasium. A sluggish fourth quarter proved costly for the Lady Bears, resulting in a 58-49 defeat.
In the first quarter, the game was tied twice, with a score at 4 points each and 8 minutes to play. The Lady Bears then went on an 8-0 run, taking a 12-4 lead with 2 minutes remaining. Both teams struggled with turnovers and quick shots during this period. The Bobcats closed the quarter with a 3-0 run but still trailed 12-7 at the end of the first.
Jones College opened the second quarter with a 7-1 run, taking a one-point lead at 14-13 with 7:54 left in the half. The lead shifted back and forth, but the Lady Bears managed to take a two-point lead into halftime thanks to a jumper from Shelcie LeBlanc with just 1.5 seconds remaining, making the score 22-20.
The third quarter was fiercely contested, featuring six ties and five lead changes. The Bobcats switched to a full-court press, which created challenges for the Lady Bears. A free throw by Jones with 3.7 seconds left tied the game at 37 by the end of the third quarter.
The fourth quarter continued in a similar vein, with the score tied twice in the first three minutes. However, the Bobcats' full-court press continued to trouble the Lady Bears. Capitalizing on Baton Rouge's struggles, Jones College outscored the Lady Bears 21-12 in the fourth quarter, leading to their 58-49 victory.
Shelcie LeBlanc led the Lady Bears with 20 points, while Lamarah Cleaves scored a game-high 25 points for the Bobcats. Both teams had only one player score in double figures.
With this loss, the Lady Bears fell to 4-5 for the season, while the Bobcats improved to 7-1. Jones College now leads the all-time series 5-2 over Baton Rouge.
