Baton Rouge, LA
The Baton Rouge Lady Bears aimed to extend their winning streak and build on the momentum from their victory against Holmes on Thursday night. They faced off against the Coastal Alabama North Coyotes this afternoon in the Bonne Sante Wellness Center and secured a win with a decisive score of 87 to 60.
In the first quarter, the Coyotes jumped out to an early 8-3 lead with 6:22 remaining. However, the Bears responded with a quick 8-2 run, tying the game at 11 with 3:47 left in the quarter. Shelcie LeBlanc contributed two free throws to equalize, followed by two more that gave the Bears a 13-11 lead. The Lady Bears closed the quarter on a 5-0 run, taking an 18-11 advantage into the second quarter.
The Lady Bears intensified their defensive pressure in the second quarter, forcing multiple turnovers from the Coyotes and limiting their offensive possessions. With sophomore point guard Patience Johnson sidelined due to an injury in the first quarter, freshmen Koi Ursin and Cambrieion Link stepped up to lead the Lady Bears' offense. They outscored the Coyotes 31 to 14 in the second quarter, establishing a commanding 49-25 lead by halftime.
At the half, Coach Lee urged her team to maintain their aggressive play and continue pushing the ball on offense. The Lady Bears followed her advice, thanks to standout performances from Emani Young, Koi Ursin, and Jacey Coleman. They outscored the Coyotes 26 to 12 in the third quarter, extending their lead to 75-37 heading into the final period.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Bears cleared their bench, giving every available player a chance to contribute. Although the Coyotes found some offensive rhythm, outscoring the Lady Bears 23 to 12 in the quarter, it wasn't enough to close the gap, and Baton Rouge won the game 87 to 60. This marks the third consecutive win for Coach Lee's Lady Bears.
Emani Young led the Lady Bears with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Joy Minnifield led the Coyotes, also scoring 20 points. The Lady Bears had five players in double figures: Young, Coleman, Moland, LeBlanc, and Link. The Coyotes had two players in double figures: Minnifield and Miller.
