The Lady Bears traveled to Wesson this evening to face off against Region 23 opponent, the Copiah Lincoln Lady Wolves, in the Mullen Gymnasium. The game came down to the final seconds, but the Lady Bears held on to secure a 57-53 victory over the Lady Wolves.
The Lady Bears started aggressively in the first quarter, jumping out to a quick 10-2 lead midway through. Using a zone defense, they flustered the Lady Wolves, who struggled to connect on multiple shots. Emani Young led the scoring for the Lady Bears in the first quarter with 6 points. By the end of the first quarter, the Lady Bears held a six-point lead at 14-8.
In the second quarter, the Lady Wolves launched a mini 10-5 run, closing the gap to just one point at 19-18 with 6:53 remaining. However, the Lady Bears dominated the boards and found success in the paint, extending their lead to 9 points by halftime with a score of 35-26.
At halftime, Head Coach Paula Lee encouraged her players to remain aggressive on both ends of the floor and to seize the victory.
Unfortunately, the Lady Bears came out flat in the third quarter, and the Lady Wolves' defensive press created challenges for them. The Lady Wolves opened the quarter with an 8-3 run, closing the gap to 4 points at 38-34. The Lady Wolves then hit a three-pointer to pull within one, and following a foul by the Lady Bears, they converted one of two free throws to tie the game at 38 with 4:12 remaining in the quarter. The game then saw three ties, with the last being a buzzer-beater three-point shot by the Lady Wolves, ending the quarter tied at 43.
In the fourth quarter, both teams battled back and forth, with no team leading by more than 3 points during the first six minutes of play. With 3:17 remaining, Patience Johnson converted two free throws to increase the Lady Bears' lead to 54-49. With just one minute left, the Bears held a slim 54-53 lead over the Lady Wolves. The Lady Wolves had multiple opportunities to regain the lead in the last 26.6 seconds, but they missed their shots and failed to secure rebounds and putbacks. The Lady Bears grabbed the final rebounds and sealed the victory by making 3 free throws, finishing the game at 57-53.
With this victory, the Lady Bears improved to 1-4, while the Lady Wolves fell to 3-1 on the season. Copiah Lincoln still leads the all-time series with 17 wins and 5 losses over Baton Rouge. Jacey Coleman was the standout for the Lady Bears, scoring 17 points, while Eymani Key led the Lady Wolves with a game-high 18 points.
