Strong Pitching and Timely Hitting helps Lady Bears sweep Angelina College

Baton Rouge, LA  

The Baton Rouge Lady Bears and the Angelina College Lady Roadrunners met a day earlier than scheduled to play their pair of games at the Hartley Vey Sports Complex in Oak Villa. The Lady Bears managed to sweep the Lady Roadrunners, winning both games by scores of 11-8 and 6-3.  

Game One  

In the first game, the Lady Bears overcame an early deficit to secure an 11-8 victory. Angelina College started strong, scoring one run in the first inning to take an early lead. The Lady Roadrunners then added another run in the second inning and two runs in the third to establish a 4-0 advantage over the Lady Bears.  

However, the Lady Bears had a breakout inning in the bottom of the third, scoring six runs to take a 6-4 lead. Addysen Thornton led off the inning with a walk, Miley Percle reached base on an error, and Raievah Craddock walked to load the bases. Lindsey Hudson followed with a single up the middle, scoring Thornton and Percle for the Lady Bears' first two runs. Craddock then made a daring steal of home to pull the Lady Bears within one run. Meaux Carroll walked to keep the momentum going, and Jardyn Wheeler hit a double up the middle to score Hudson and Carroll, giving the Lady Bears a one-run lead, 5-4. Lauren Landrum capped the inning with a single to left field, plating Wheeler and extending the lead to 6-4 after three innings.  

The Lady Roadrunners fought back, tying the game at 6 in the fourth inning with a two-run homer by E. Stephenson. They then added another run in the same inning to regain a 7-6 lead. Angelina continued to build on their advantage, making it 8-6 in the top of the fifth inning.  

However, the Lady Bears responded again, scoring five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take an 11-8 lead. Jardyn Wheeler hit a lead-off homer to center field, reigniting the team's spirit. Lanie Eschette walked, and Lauren Landrum reached on an error. Addysen Thornton also reached base on a fielding error, which allowed Eschette to score and tie the game at 8. Karley Chaney pinch-ran for Thornton, followed by Miley Percle reaching base on a fielder's choice. Both Chaney and Percle scored on a single by Lindsey Hudson. Meaux Carroll then hit a single up the middle, plating Hudson for the Lady Bears' fifth run of the inning. Kailey Dwyer came in and pitched flawlessly, retiring the Lady Roadrunners in order in the sixth and seventh innings to secure the 11-8 victory for the Lady Bears.  

Madelyn Nolen started in the circle for the Lady Bears, pitching 2.1 innings and allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 8 hits while walking 1 and striking out 3. Kailey Dwyer relieved Nolen and pitched 4.2 innings, allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits, while walking none and striking out 2. J. Sumpter started for the Lady Roadrunners and took the loss, pitching 6 innings and allowing 11 runs (5 earned) on 7 hits, while walking 5 and striking out 4.  

Despite the loss, Angelina out-hit Baton Rouge 14-7, while the Lady Roadrunners were charged with 6 errors compared to just 1 for the Lady Bears.

Game Two 

The Lady Bears secured a 6-3 no-hit victory against the Angelina College Lady Roadrunners, thanks to the outstanding performance of sophomore pitcher Abbey Borel in game two of today's doubleheader. 

Angelina took advantage of some Lady Bears fielding miscues, along with a couple of walks and a hit by pitch, to score two runs in the top of the first inning and take an early lead. However, Baton Rouge tied the game and then took the lead with four runs in the bottom of the third inning, making the score 4-2. Lindsey Hudson led off with a walk, and Meaux Carroll followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position. Kyla Ashford then hit an infield single, driving in Hudson for the Lady Bears' first run of the game. Jardyn Wheeler contributed with a single to left field, scoring Carroll and tying the game at two. Although Lanie Eschette grounded out, Ashford scored on the play. Finally, Addysen Thornton hit a single to left field to drive in Wheeler, giving the Lady Bears their fourth run of the inning. 

The Lady Roadrunners managed to add one run in the fifth inning when E. Zunker reached base on a dropped third strike and scored on a sacrifice fly, but they still trailed 4-3. Baton Rouge then added two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 6-3. Lanie Eschette hit a single to right field and advanced to third on a double by Lauren Landrum. Adding to the lead, Addysen Thornton hit another single to right field, driving in both Eschette and Landrum. 

Abbey Borel faced some challenges in the top of the seventh but managed to pitch her way out of the inning, securing the 6-3 no-hit victory. Borel pitched a complete game, throwing 7 innings and allowing 3 runs (0 earned) on no hits, while walking 7 and striking out 11. E. Stephenson started in the circle for the Lady Roadrunners and took the loss, pitching 6 innings and allowing 6 runs on 11 hits, while walking 2 and striking out 1. 

Baton Rouge outhit Angelina 11-0, and the Lady Roadrunners were credited with two errors compared to one for the Lady Bears. 

Lady Bears Highlights 

With this pair of victories, the Lady Bears improved to 9-19, while the Lady Roadrunners fell to 9-15. The all-time series is now tied, with both teams having 4 wins and 4 losses. 

Up Next

The Lady Bears will travel to Port Arthur, Texas, on Wednesday, March 11, to take on the Seahawks from Lamar Port Arthur in a doubleheader starting at 1 PM.
