Lady Bears Softball lose a pair of game at SMCC

Tuesday, February 24, 2026: Softball 

Summit, MS 

The Baton Rouge Lady Bears traveled to Summit, Mississippi, to face the Southwest Mississippi Lady Bears in a rematch. SMCC had previously swept BRCC back in early February in Baton Rouge, winning those games 9-7 and 6-4, showcasing greater firepower in both matches. In today's matchup the Baton Rouge Bears would fight till the end but they wold fall 12-9 and 7-6.

Game One 

Southwest Mississippi jumped out to an early lead and held off a late rally by Baton Rouge to win game one 12-9. 

SMCC scored a run in the first inning, taking the lead with a double from C. Tabolt, followed by a fielding error from the Lady Bears. A. Landier led off the second inning for Southwest with a homer to center field. Southwest plated six runs in the second inning, establishing a commanding 7-0 lead over Baton Rouge. 

BRCC refused to back down and began to chip away at Southwest's lead, scoring a run in the top of the third inning. Lanie Eschette led off with a double up the middle and scored on a single by Lindsey Hudson. However, Southwest opened the bottom of the frame with another homer, this time from K. Clements. They scored three more runs in the inning, extending their lead to 10-1. 

Baton Rouge continued to fight and added four runs in the top of the fourth, trailing 10-5. Addysen Thornton led off with a single, Meaux Carroll drew a walk, and Jardyn Wheeler hit a single to load the bases. Miley Percle hit a two-out double to left field, bringing Thornton, Carroll, and Wheeler home. Karley Chaney then hit a single to left, scoring Percle. 

Southwest managed to get two insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, making it 12-5. Baton Rouge remained determined and continued to scratch runs. Jardyn Wheeler led off the sixth with a solo homer to left field. Lanie Eschette hit a double to center field, and Emily Camacho added an infield single, putting two runners on base. Karley Chaney grounded out, but Eschette scored. Lindsey Hudson reached on an error and drove home Camacho, bringing BRCC's total to three runs for the inning. However, they still trailed 12-8. BRCC held SMCC scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, giving themselves a chance.  

In the seventh inning, Addysen Thornton led off with another double. Jardyn Wheeler doubled as well, scoring a run, but BRCC couldn't complete their comeback, as they recorded a lineout and a popout, ultimately falling 12-9. 

Kailey Dwyer started in the circle for the BRCC Lady Bears and took the loss, pitching 2 innings while allowing 7 runs (5 earned) on 7 hits and walking 1. Madylen Nolen and Emily Camacho pitched in relief for the Lady Bears. A. Ladnier started in the circle for the SMCC Lady Bears and earned the victory, pitching 6 innings and allowing 8 runs (6 earned) on 12 hits, while walking 1 and striking out 1. 

Both teams recorded 14 hits in the game, with BRCC committing 3 errors compared to 2 for SMCC.

• Miley Percle: 2 for 4 with 1 run and 3 RBIs  

• Karley Chaney: 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs  

• Lindsey Hudson: 1 for 4 with 1 RBI  

• Kyla Ashford: 2 for 4 with 2 runs  

• Meaux Carroll: 1 for 3 with 1 run and 1 walk  

• Jardyn Wheeler: 3 for 4 with 2 runs, 2 RBIs, and 1 homer  

• Lanie Eschette: 2 for 4 with 2 runs  

• Emily Camacho: 1 for 3 with 1 run 

Game Two  

The Baton Rouge Lady Bears led throughout most of the game until the Southwest Lady Bears scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, completing a comeback victory with a final score of 7-6. 

Baton Rouge struck first, scoring a run in the first inning. Miley Percle led off with an infield single and scored on a double by Lindsey Hudson to center field. 

The BRCC Lady Bears added two more runs in the top of the third inning, taking a 3-0 lead. Lauren Landrum started with a double and advanced to third on an infield fielder's choice by Miley Percle. Karley Chaney also reached on a fielder's choice, but Landrum was thrown out at the plate. Kyla Ashford reached on a fielding error, which allowed Percle and Chaney to score. 

Southwest got on the board in the bottom of the third inning, scoring two runs but still trailing 3-2. 

Both teams showcased excellent defense and pitching, working their way out of jams in the fourth and fifth innings. 

Baton Rouge extended their lead to 6-2 with three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Lindsey Hudson led off with a single up the middle, followed by Kyla Ashford, who drew a walk to place two runners on base. Meaux Carroll grounded out, but both runners advanced 60 feet. Jardyn Wheeler then walked, loading the bases with two outs. Laine Eschette delivered a double, clearing the bases and scoring three runs. 

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Southwest began with a double. BRCC quickly recorded a ground out and a strikeout. Then, Southwest hit a single and drew a walk to load the bases. J. Phillips hit a single to drive in one run, and A. Dejean followed up with a two-run homer to straight center field, giving Southwest a 7-6 lead. Baton Rouge managed to get two runners on in the seventh inning but stranded them, ending their comeback attempt. 

Abbey Borel started in the circle for Baton Rouge and took the loss. She pitched six innings, allowing seven runs on ten hits, while walking five and striking out 15. This impressive 15 strikeouts set a new single-game strikeout record for the Lady Bears. C. Talbot started in the circle for Southwest and was credited with the victory after pitching six innings, allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits, while walking three and striking out six. B. Kraft pitched in relief for Southwest. 

Southwest outhit Baton Rouge 10 to 6, and Southwest was credited with two errors.

• Lindsey Hudson: 2 for 3 with 1 run, 1 RBI, and 1 walk 

• Kyla Ashford: 1 walk and 1 run 

• Jardyn Wheeler: 1 for 2 with 1 run and 1 walk 

• Lanie Eschette: 1 for 3 with 3 RBIs 

• Lauren Landrum: 1 for 3 

With this pair of losses, the BRCC Lady Bears fell to 6-16, while the Southwest Mississippi Lady Bears improved to 10-3 on the season. Southwest Mississippi leads the all-time series, holding 23 wins to Baton Rouge's 18 losses. 

Next Up:

The Lady Bears will return home to face the #3 Copiah Lincoln Lady Wolves in a doubleheader on Thursday, February 26, 2026. First pitch is set for 1 PM at Hartley Vey Sports Complex-Oak Villa.
