Lady Bears Softball drops a pair of game to defending national champions COLIN

Wesson, MS  

The Baton Rouge Lady Bears traveled to Wesson, Mississippi, to take on the defending NJCAA Division II National Champions, the Lady Wolves of Copiah Lincoln Community College, in a doubleheader. The Lady Wolves swept the Lady Bears with final scores of 11-1 and 8-0.  

Game One 

The Baton Rouge Lady Bears struggled to overcome the fast start by the COLIN Lady Wolves in the first game of today's doubleheader, ultimately losing 11-1 after five innings.  

The Lady Wolves exploded in their home opener, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first inning to seize an early lead. The Lady Bears managed their only hit of the game in the top of the second inning when Lanie Eschette singled to right field, but nothing came of it. The Lady Wolves continued to dominate, adding five more runs in the bottom of the third inning to take an commanding 11-0 lead. The Lady Bears finally got two runners on in the top of the fifth via walks, and Raievah Craddock reached on an error, allowing Dwyer to score the Lady Bears' only run of the game. The COLIN Lady Wolves defeated the BRCC Lady Bears 11-1 in five innings.  

Kailey Dwyer started in the circle for the Lady Bears and took the loss, pitching 4 innings and allowing 11 runs on 8 hits, with 2 walks and 1 strikeout. Ava Browder started for the Lady Wolves and earned the victory, pitching 3 innings without allowing any runs, giving up 1 hit, with 2 walks and 1 strikeout. L. Crum pitched in relief for the Lady Wolves.  

Copiah Lincoln out-hit Baton Rouge 11 to 1, and the Lady Wolves committed 2 errors compared to 1 for the Lady Bears.  

Lady Bears Highlights:  

• Lanie Eschette: 1 for 2  

• Kailey Dwyer: 1 run 

Game Two 

The Lady Bears held their ground against the Lady Wolves for most of the second game, but the Lady Wolves scored 7 runs in the final three innings to secure an 8-0 victory in 6 innings.  

COLIN opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a home run by A. Vanlaircom to take the lead. For the next two innings, neither team could generate much offense, as it turned into a pitching duel between Lady Bears pitcher Abbey Borel and Lady Wolves pitcher A. Lindley. The Lady Wolves managed to score another run in the bottom of the fourth inning, extending their lead to 2-0. They struck again with another long ball in the bottom of the fifth inning when B. Reine hit a three-run home run to center field, increasing the Lady Wolves' lead to 5-0. The Lady Bears continued to struggle to find that timely hit. The Lady Wolves capped the game by plating three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, ending it with an 8-0 victory.  

Abbey Borel started in the circle for the Lady Bears and took the loss, pitching 5.2 innings and allowing 8 runs on 9 hits, with 7 walks and 1 strikeout. A. Lindley started for the Lady Wolves and earned the victory, pitching 6 innings without allowing any runs, giving up 4 hits, with 1 walk and 5 strikeouts.  

Copiah Lincoln out-hit Baton Rouge 9 to 4, and the Lady Wolves made 1 error.  

Lady Bears Highlights:  

• Lindsey Hudson: 2 for 3  

• Lanie Eschette: 2 for 2 

With this pair of losses, the Lady Bears fell to 2-14, while the Lady Wolves improved to 9-1 on the season. Copiah Lincoln leads the all-time series with 31 wins and 4 losses against Baton Rouge.  

Next Up:  

The Lady Bears will return home this Friday, February 20, to start a four-game home-and-home series with the Mississippi Delta Lady Trojans at Hartley Vey Sports Complex - Oak Villa. The first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 PM.
