Beas split with #10 the LSUE Lady Bengals

The Baton Rouge Bears faced off against the #10 LSUE Lady Bengals this afternoon at the Hartley-Vey Oak Villa Sports Complex in a rematch. The Bears split the doubleheader, winning game one 4-3 and the Lady Bengals taking game two 9-3.
Game One
The Bears scored first and held off a late rally from the Lady Bengals to win 4-3 in the first game of the doubleheader.
In the first inning, the Lady Bengals took the lead when P. Prince drew a walk, stole second and third, and scored on a single by M. Elisa. They had another runner on base after K. Atolls hit a double, but Abbey Borel settled down in the circle, striking out one batter and getting two others to fly out and ground out, leaving the runners stranded at the end of the inning.
The Bears quickly responded in the bottom of the first with back-to-back home runs from Kyla Ashford and Maddie Robinson. The Bears then loaded the bases with a single by Mary Wicke, a hit by pitch on Baylie Romero, and a walk by Rylee Guthrie, but the Lady Bengals got out of the jam and left the Bears stranded. After one inning, the Bears led 2-1.
The Lady Bengals tied the game at two in the top of the second inning. The Bears regained the lead in the bottom of the frame, going up 4-2. Averie Ashford hit an infield single, advanced to third on a double by her twin sister Kyla Ashford, and then Mary Wicke hit a double to center field, scoring both Ashford twins.
Neither team managed to score for the next three innings, so after five innings, the Bears led the Lady Bengals 4-2. The Lady Bengals managed to score one run in the top of the sixth inning, trailing the Bears 4-3. However, they stranded a runner on third base when Maddie Robinson induced a pop fly that Averie Ashford caught at the left field fence.
Maddie Robinson secured the victory for the Bears by setting down the Lady Bengals in order in the top of the seventh inning.
Abbey Borel started in the circle for the Bears, pitching five innings and allowing three runs on six hits while walking one and striking out two. Borel was credited with the victory. Briley LeBeouf pitched 0.2 innings and Maddie Robinson pitched 1.1 innings in relief, earning the save. R. Rios started for the Lady Bengals and took the loss, pitching six innings and allowing four runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out two.
Baton Rouge outhit LSUE 8 to 7, and the Bears were credited with two errors.

Game Two
The Lady Bengals scored at least one run in five out of the seven innings during the second game of today's doubleheader. The Bears were unable to keep up with the Lady Bengals' offensive surge and fell 9-3.
The Lady Bengals took the lead early for the second consecutive game, scoring 2 runs. The Bears responded by scoring 1 run in the bottom of the first inning, bringing the score to 2-1. Averie Ashford led off with a double to left field and advanced to third on a ground out by Maddie Robinson. Mary Wicke then hit a single to left field, allowing Ashford to score.
In the top of the second inning, the Lady Bengals added four more runs to extend their lead to 6-1. C. Orgeron began the inning with a home run to left field. M. Harris reached base due to an error by the Bears, and she came home on a two-run homer hit by P. Prince.
The Lady Bengals increased their lead further in the top of the third inning, making it 7-1. The Bears loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth and managed to score a run, narrowing the gap to 7-2. Mary Wicke was hit by a pitch, Baylie Romero reached base on an error, and Rylee Guthrie drew a walk. Eve Fruge' hit a sacrifice fly to bring Wicke home from third.
In the fifth inning, the Lady Bengals capitalized on some inconsistent pitching from the Bears, walking three batters and managing to score another run, bringing the score to 8-1. The Bears matched that run in the bottom of the fifth; Averie Ashford reached base on an error, scoring on a sacrifice bunt and an error by the Lady Bengals.
The Lady Bengals secured an insurance run in the top of the seventh, finalizing the game with a 9-3 victory over the Bears.
Briley LeBeouf started on the mound for the Bears and took the loss, pitching 1.1 innings while allowing 5 runs (4 earned) on 4 hits, walking 1, and striking out 1. Olivia Burns (0.2 innings), Maddie Robinson (4.0 innings), and Jennifer Fontenot (1.0 inning) pitched in relief for the Bears. E. Savage was the starting pitcher for the Lady Bengals and earned the victory, allowing 1 run on 2 hits over 3 innings while walking 1 and striking out 2.

With this split, the Bears improved their record to 20-16, while the Lady Bengals improved to 37-9. LSUE still leads the all-time series against Baton Rouge, with 59 wins and 3 losses.
The Bears will play their second-to-last home series this Thursday, April 17, at Hartley Vey Oak Villa Sports Complex against the John Melvin University Millers. The first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2 PM. After the games, we will honor our nine sophomores for Sophomore Day.
