Bears split with the Holmes Lady Bulldogs

The Baton Rouge Bears softball team traveled to Goodman, Mississippi, this afternoon to take on the Holmes Lady Bulldogs in a doubleheader. The teams split the day, with the Bears winning game one 7-3 and losing game two 3-2.
Game One
The Bears came out strong, plating two runs in the first inning to take an early lead. Maddie Robinson led off the game with a double to center field and scored on a single by Mary Wicke, who then scored on a single by Baylie Romero, giving the Bears a 2-0 lead. The Lady Bulldogs managed to score a run in the bottom of the third, but they still trailed the Bears 2-1.
For the next three innings, both teams' starting pitchers were effective, keeping the opposing teams off balance at the plate, resulting in three scoreless innings.
The Bears exploded offensively in the top of the seventh inning, scoring five runs to take a commanding 7-1 lead over the Lady Bulldogs. Lindsey Hudson singled to the pitcher, followed by Ashyln Hebert hitting a two-run home run over the left field fence. After Mary Wicke hit a single to center field, Jardyn Wheeler reached on an error, and Baylie Romero reached on another Holmes error to load the bases for the Bears. Rylee Guthrie then hit a single to left field, scoring Wicke and Wheeler, and Eve Fruge' capped off the inning with a double to right field that plated Romero.
The Lady Bulldogs put up a fight in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases with a pair of singles and a double. They hit another double, plating two runs, but it wasn't enough as the Bears held on to win 7-3.
Briley LeBeouf started in the circle for the Bears and earned the complete game victory, pitching seven innings while allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out two. A. Sartin started for the Lady Bulldogs and took the loss, pitching 6.2 innings, allowing seven runs (four earned) on 14 hits and striking out two.
Baton Rouge out-hit Holmes 14 to 7, and the Lady Bulldogs were credited with four errors in the game.

Game Two
Game two featured excellent pitching performances from both teams' starting pitchers, but a late rally by the Lady Bulldogs enabled them to defeat the Bears 3-2.
The Bears scored first with a run in the first inning. Ashyln Hebert hit a single up the middle and scored on a double to left field by Mary Wicke. The Bears added another run in the third inning when Kennedy Kelly drew a walk and scored on a single by Kyla Ashford.
The Lady Bulldogs answered in the sixth inning, scoring three runs to take a 3-2 lead over the Bears. The Bears went down in order in the seventh inning, sealing the Lady Bulldogs' comeback victory.
Maddie Robinson started in the circle for the Bears and took the loss, pitching six innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out six. M. Swilley started for the Lady Bulldogs, pitching five innings and allowing one run on four hits, walking three and striking out two. L. Ryals pitched one inning in relief for the Lady Bulldogs and earned the victory.
Both teams collected six hits, and the Bears were credited with two errors in the ballgame.

With the split, the Bears improved to 19-13, while the Lady Bulldogs improved to 14-20. Holmes still leads the all-time series with 16 wins and 5 losses against Baton Rouge.
The Bears will travel to Eunice, Louisiana, this Saturday, April 12, to make up games against the #13 LSUE Bengals. The doubleheader will start at 1 PM at Lady Bengals Field
