Bears Basketball drops heartbreaker to SUSLA

The Baton Rouge Bears traveled to Shreveport this afternoon to take on the Southern University Jags at the Dock on the campus of LSUS. Unfortunately, the Bears let the game slip away late, losing 67 to 62 in an LCCAC matchup.
The first half of the game was a contested battle between the Bears and the Jags, featuring a very low scoring opening period. With 11 minutes remaining in the half, the game was tied at 12 when the Jags converted two free throws after the Bears had taken their second lead via a fast break dunk from Bryce Coleman to Cardez Norman. The Bears responded with back-to-back baskets from Bryce Coleman and an "and-one" play from Cardez Norman, extending their lead to 17-14. The Bears highlighted excellent teamwork and received strong contributions from their bench, heading into the locker room with a 32 to 26 lead.
In the early moments of the second half, the Bears increased their lead to ten points, 38-28, with baskets from Noah Whitehead and Jok Job at the 18:26 mark. However, the Jags refused to back down, narrowing the gap to five points at 45-49 with 13 minutes remaining. The Jags tied the game at 57 following a fast break dunk with 4:44 left on the clock. The score was tied again at 59 with 2:35 remaining. Unfortunately, the Bears made a couple of costly mental errors that the Jags capitalized on to take a 62-59 lead. The Jags outscored the Bears 8-3 to close out the game, securing a 67-62 victory in the conference matchup.
The Bears were led in scoring by Nicholas Womack with 12 points. The Bears had two student athletes score in double figure, Womack and Dylan Dominique. The Jags were led by Kevin Kirk with 14. The Jags had four student athletes score in double figures, Kirk, Thomas, Vengeto and Gilchrist.
With this loss, the Bears' record falls to 10-14 overall and 1-2 in conference play, while the Jags improve to 14-9 and 1-1 on the season. Southern Shreveport leads the all-time series against Baton Rouge, with 25 wins to 23 losses.
