Baton Rouge, LA
The Baton Rouge Bears returned home today to kick off their home season against the Florida Coastal Prep Spartans in the second annual Education Game. Students from WHAM and Cedarcrest attended the game, bringing the energy and excitement the Bears needed to secure a 78-62 victory.
The first five minutes saw a back-and-forth battle between the Bears and the Spartans. At the 15-minute mark, the Bears held a 12-6 lead. The Spartans stayed competitive, and the Bears struggled to widen the gap. With 6:32 remaining in the half, the Bears managed only a 4-point lead at 22-18. However, the Bears found success with an aggressive defensive scheme, which helped them convert opportunities into baskets. They finished the half on a 13-7 run, taking a ten-point lead into halftime, 35-25.
During the halftime break, Head Coach Byron Starks encouraged his players to compete on both ends of the floor and to finish the game strong.
The second half featured several substitutions as the Bears' depth came into play. They tightened their defense and executed their offensive strategies more effectively, building a 17-point lead over the Spartans with 11 minutes left, at 55-38. Although the Spartans continued to fight back, their comeback fell short, and the Bears ultimately won by a score of 78-62.
With this victory, the Bears improved to 1-2 on the season. Nicholas Womack led the Bears in scoring with 14 points, while J. Harris recorded a game-high 21 points for the Spartans. Both teams had two players score in double figures.
Bears Highlights:
- Nicholas Womack: 14 points and 5 assists
- Amir Abdul-Rauf: 13 points
- Cardez Norman: 9 points and 7 rebounds
