Q& A with Head Men's Basketball Coach Don Green
November 1, 2021: Men's Basketball
This week Tronayia Issac sat down with Head Men's Basketball Coach Dr. Don Green to discuss the 2021-22 season. Dr. Green begins his fourth season at the helm of the Bears Basketball program. Let's see what Dr. Green had to say about the season and his team.
Q& A Session:
- General thoughts about this year's team?
Coach Green's Answer: I really like this team, I think that we have a lot of good guards, I think our skill set is very good, and i think we know how to play on the ball, and off the ball, an i think we have a really good chance to be very competitive
- Talk a bit about which True Freshman do you think can make an impact on this season.
Coach Green Answer: I think that all our incoming freshman are going to be contributors in some form or fashion, right now no-one stands out better than the other, but I do know that they come in with a lot of experience, which meaning that they were contributors on their high school team, and i just think that's going to roll over to what we do here,an i just believe each one of them are going to make a contribution at some point throughout this season.
- Which return or group of returners are you looking to lean on this season?
Coach Green Answer:Returners obviously Jayhlon Young, Julius Ellerbe, Kaevon Jones, are 3 of the guys that played major minutes for us last year, and obviously we look to them to be leaders. Also, Jordan Randall we think is going to be a very good contributor, Morantz James, Rodney Felton, will be helpful to what we do, and I think each one of them will add in rebounding, shooting, and defending. They all will be contributors that will help us get to where we want to be this year.
- Keys to success, keys to returning to the BRCC winning culture?
Coach Green Answer: First of all i think to win you have to win off the court as well as on the court. So that comes to do with what we do academically and I think so far we have had a lot of great success in our young men taking care of their academic work. How that rolls over, I think that one key to our season is how well we defend, and how well we play together. I think we are going to have to rebound with passion, and play on and off the ball with one another. And I think the team chemistry will really bond together and allow us to compete in every game. I believe every game we play in we're going to have a chance to win, and I think that's because of the character of the young people we have and again that goes on and off the court.
- Strength of team so far.
Coach Green's Answer: Our Strength's are very obvious, one I think we have good shooter's, our quickness is going to be an asset and again our overall chemistry. I think we have some high character young people. I think they are going to do what the coach asks them to do. What are we asking? To defend with passion, share the ball, and play with passion.
- Areas of improvement.
Coach Green's Answer: So far area's we're going to need to improve on is our rebounding skills. When we go with our small team/ quick team obviously that helps us on one end but it also causes some situations on the other, that we're going to be shorter than most teams, so that means we're going to really have to defend with a purpose, and we have to rebound with passion. If we do those two things on the offense end we're going to be just fine.
- Game style- uptempo/slow?
Coach Green's Answer: Our game style is going to be Uptempo, because of our ball handling skills , shooting skills, and I think when we play a little bit faster it's going to open the floor up for us to give our guys the opportunity to display their skills- shooting, dribbling, driving, all those are apart of what we do.
- Overall goal of the season?
Coach Green's Answer: Our Overall goal this season is to compete for our conference championship. I think that we're going to be capable of doing that. It's going to be tough, all the other teams in our conference are very strong teams, and well coached. But I think competing for that conference title is going to be the number one goal and then getting into the regional tournament, and actually going into that tournament with confidence knowing that we can compete and to win some games. So the ultimate goal is to play for a national title.
