Bears are swept by #14 Jones College Bobcats in Ellisville

The Baton Rouge Bears traveled to Ellisville, Mississippi, this afternoon to complete a home-and-home series against the #14 Jones College Bobcats at Community Bank Park. The Bobcats swept the day, winning the doubleheader with scores of 7-2 and 9-2, thus sweeping the season series against the Bears. 

Game One 

Jones College scored at least one run in four of their six opportunities in Game One, defeating Baton Rouge 7-2 to kick off today's doubleheader. The Bobcats got on the board first with a run in the second inning when S. Ainsworth reached base on an error by the Bears and later scored on a single by S. Oakley. After two innings, the Bobcats led the Bears 1-0. 

The Bears threatened in the top of the third inning when Keegan Kelsey hit an infield single, Kenneth Berard was hit by a pitch, and Cooper Martin drew a walk to load the bases, but all three were stranded. The Bobcats increased their lead by plating three runs in the bottom of the third, making the score 4-0. 

In the top of the fourth, the Bears loaded the bases again. Cameron Washington singled to right field, Gabriel McKee reached on an error, and Keegan Kelsey was hit by a pitch. Jayden Jackson walked, bringing Washington home for the Bears' first run of the game. The Bobcats responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth, extending their lead to 5-1. 

The Bears loaded the bases once more in the top of the fifth inning, with Cooper Martin leading off with a double to left field. Cameron Washington drew a walk, and Gabriel McKee singled to right with one out, but the Bears could only score one run when Mason LeBlanc walked to bring home Martin. The Bobcats finished the inning strong, inducing two strikeouts to end the threat, and the Bears trailed 5-2. 

In the bottom of the sixth, the Bobcats added two more runs to extend their lead to 7-2. The Bears went down in order in the top of the seventh, securing the victory for the Bobcats. 

Spencer Srubar started on the mound for the Bears, pitching 2.2 innings while allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 4 hits, walking 2, and striking out 2.Srubar was credited with the loss. Kyle Stansbury (1.0 inning), Grayson Davis (1.0 inning), and Chandler Moreau (0.1 inning) pitched in relief. T. Hodges started for the Bobcats, pitching 4.1 innings with 2 runs allowed (1 earned) on 4 hits, walking 3, and striking out 4 Hodges earned the victory for the Bobcats. C. Rayburn pitched in relief for the Bobcats. 

Baton Rouge was outhit 8 to 6. The Bobcats were credited with three errors, while the Bears had two in the game.

Game Two 

The Bears' offensive struggles continued in the nightcap as they failed to find timely hits and could not control the high-powered offense of Jones. The Bobcats defeated the Bears 9-2 to sweep the series. 

The Bobcats struck first with four runs in the first inning, including two runs from a home run by B. Quick to center field. After one inning, the Bobcats led 4-0. They further extended their lead when B. Quick hit a two-run homer to left field. After three innings, the Bobcats held a 6-0 lead. 

The Bobcats continued to dominate at the plate, adding two more runs to make it 8-0 after four innings. The Bears finally got on the board in the fifth inning when Hudson Heltz walked, and Cameron Washington recorded the team's first hit of the game with a dribbler down the first-base line. Peyton Chiasson was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Keegan Kelsey hit into a fielder's choice, resulting in Heltz being thrown out at the plate, but a passed ball allowed Washington to score, making it 8-1. 

The Bobcats added another run in the sixth inning with a solo homer to left field by S. Ainsworth, increasing their lead to 9-1. The Bears fought back, with Hudson Heltz leading off the top of the seventh with a double to left center. Gabriel McKee then singled, bringing Heltz home for the Bears' final run of the game. Unfortunately, that was all the Bears could manage as they fell 9-2 in the nightcap. 

Payton Stubbs started on the mound for the Bears and took the loss; he pitched 2 innings, allowing 5 runs on 5 hits while walking 1 and striking out 2. Grant Porche (1.2 innings) and James T. Lewis (2.1 innings) pitched in relief. B. Graham started for the Bobcats, earning the victory with 5 innings pitched, allowing 1 run on 1 hit, walking 1, and striking out 5. R. Thompson pitched in relief for the Bobcats. 

Jones outhit Baton Rouge 11 to 3, and the Bobcats were credited with one error in the game. 

Bears Game Two Highlights 

• Hudson Heltz went 1 for 2 with 1 run and 1 double. 

• Cameron Washington went 1 for 3 with 1 run. 

• Gabriel McKee went 1 for 3 with 1 RBI. 

With the pair of losses, the Bears fall to 0-7, while the Bobcats improve to 7-1 on the season. Jones College leads the all-time series against Baton Rouge with 46 wins and 14 losses.

The Bears will travel to Perkinston, Mississippi, this Tuesday, February 10, to take on the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Bulldogs in a single nine-inning game starting at 5 PM.
