The game was tight in the first half, but the Southwest Mississippi Bears came out with avenges in the second half, to build a 24-point lead, in which they would not relinquish, on their way to the 98 to 87 victory in the BRCC Bear Classic. The teams traded bucks in the first six minutes of the game, in which, there was two ties and eight lead changes. Southwest Mississippi would take a 15-14 lead, with 13 minutes on the clock in the first half and they would never look back. The Baton Rouge Bears were down twelve at the half, 45 to 33. Southwest Mississippi came out of the locker room on fire outscoring BRCC 20 to 10, in the first six minutes. Baton Rouge had no answer for the high-powered offense of Southwest as they would build a 24-point lead with 9 minutes to play. BRCC showed some life, in the final few minutes of the game, as they would outscore Southwest 28 to 12 to get within 8; 93-85, with less than a minute to play.
Southwest had four athletes in double figures. They were led by Devin Evans and Damian Dear who each had 18 points. Devin Carlin paced Baton Rouge with 17 points. Devin's spark on the defensive end of the floor helped the Bears make the game much closer than it was. Again, BRCC struggled from the free throw line going 14-24.
Southwest Mississippi Bears improve to 2- 1 on the season; as the Baton Rouge Bears fall to 1-2.
Devin Carlin paced all Bears with 17 points
Spencer Mays scored 13 points
Brenden Vessel added 12 points
Darren Johnson scored 11 point, all in the second half
Bear Classic Notes: In the first game of the Bear Classic, Mississippi Delta Trojans defeated the CMP Prep Drillers 107 to 76. The first game on Saturday will be at 4 pm with a match of region 23 opponents, Mississippi Delta and Southwest Mississippi.
The Bears will be back in action tomorrow Saturday November 9, at 6 pm when they take on Bossier Parish, in day two of the Bears Classic.
