BRCC hosted Southwest Mississippi Community College on Wednesday afternoon at Oak Villa Park. The Lady Bears won both games against Southwest; game one was 8-0 in five innings, while game two ended on a two-run home run by Virginia Cacioppo in the bottom of the seventh. Baton Rouge would win 6-5.
Alyssa Bush pitched a complete game shutout in game one, allowing two hits to the visiting Lady Bears.
BRCC would pull away with a big fourth inning. Already leading 1-0, Liz Davis and Alexis Groce would lead off with infield singles. Royell Cobb would load the bases when she was able to get on first due to a Southwest error. With the bases loaded, Bush roped a double to left field scoring two runs, while Cobb moved to third. Bria White would knock in another run with a sacrifice fly and BRCC led 4-0.
The game would end early after the Lady Bears bat in the fifth. Katherine Cognevich, Morgan Berry and Davis loaded the bases with three singles. A rwo RBI double by Cobb, followed by another two RBI double by Bush would end the game 8-0.
Game two began looking like BRCC would pull away for another big win. The Lady Bears scattered four runs and built a 4-0 lead after three innings.
Southwest finally got on the scoreboard with a two run home run in the fourth inning. They would later add another run to cut the deficit to 4-3.
After tying the game in the sixth inning, Southwest Mississippi would take the lead in the 7th when they scored the go ahead run.
Trailing for the first time all season at home, BRCC never wavered. Bria White reached safely with a single, followed by a Cacioppo rocket to over the right field fence. The Lady Bears had rallied to win 6-5 and sweep Southwest Mississippi.
Baton Rouge improved to 8-5 on the season, including 4-0 at Oak Villa. They will take a five game winning streak to Beaumont, TX this weekend to compete in the Lamar State - Port Arthur Tournament.
